Why Some of the World’s Most Successful Athletes Use Sensory Deprivation and Float Therapy to Recharge and Excel

Float therapy continues to grow in popularity due to its various health and mental benefits. It’s very likely that many of the people you encounter in your day-to-day life are enjoying float therapy sessions. Our Burlington float therapy clinic welcomes both experienced and novice float tank participants. The Internet is full of amazing stories of everyday people and even professional athletes all incorporating regular float therapy into their fitness routines.

During this blog post, we’ll share the various profound float therapy experiences of some of the world’s best-known professional athletes.

NBA superstar Steph Curry is known for his circus-like three-point shooting and being the anchor of one of basketball’s most successful dynasties, the Golden State Warriors. Being an MVP talent in the NBA takes a lot of skill, hard work and training and Steph Curry is known for being a professional both on and off the court, but did you know that this two-time champ incorporates regular float therapy sessions into his rigorous training routine. Like many of you, Steph Curry recharges every two weeks in a float pods.

During a recent interview with Tech Insider, the all-star point guard explained how his time in a float tank has helped his game.

“With the Epsom salts and magnesium that are in those tanks, they’re helpful with recovery and relaxing your muscles and things like that,” explained Steph Curry. “And also, the sensory deprivation aspect of it. It’s one of the only places where you can really get unplugged from all the noise and distractions that go on with daily life.”

Float therapy has helped Curry improve the health of his back and provides a tool for both relaxation and solitude.

“It’s refreshing to process what I thought about over an hour of floating, which are probably the most important things that are going on right now in your life,” he says. “I have a very clear head when it’s done, and it shows in the days after floating. It gives me a nice boost of focus and perspective. The more I do it, the more I get from it.”

Gymnastics is known for taking a heavy toll on the human body, Aly Raisman is one of the sport’s biggest stars. Like many of the world’s leading gymnasts, she relies on floatation therapy as a key element of her training.

“It’s like a pod, and you close it and you literally float in salt water and fall asleep for like an hour or so, that stuff is really crucial because you have to find ways to rest,” Aly Raisman explained during an interview with Bustle.

The science behind float therapy is picking up steam and its benefits are diverse. Regularly using a float pod is proven to improve sleep, alleviate body fatigue, and it’s known to revitalize both the mind and body. Studies have found that float therapy works on a physical level by increasing the production of ACTH, lactic acid, adrenaline and endorphins. Ongoing float therapy has also been shown to speed up muscle and joint rehabilitation, a key benefit for a professional athlete such as Aly Raisman.

Some of the NFL’s most successful teams are now encouraging their players to use float tanks for sensory deprivation. The Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots are a few of the teams benefiting from float therapy. Many of the football players believe their on-field performance has improved due to the better mental state gained from the use of float pools.

The Dallas Cowboys were one of the first NFL teams to experiment with float therapy when they installed float tanks back in the early 1980s.

“No doubt about it if you conquer doubt and fear, you conquer failure. If you don’t doubt, if you know you’re going to do it, it’s easier. Your muscles are more relaxed, and then you perform what you have practiced in the tank,” explained former Dallas Cowboy Kicker Rafael Septien.

Joe Rogan is known for wearing many hats. Millions of people enjoy his popular podcast worldwide and the comedian, mixed martial artist and actor is a huge advocate for float therapy. He credits float therapy for developing his mind and taking his thinking to the next level.

“Your body it gives you amazing energy, the tension release you have from a couple of hours in the tank is incredible you feel lighter, you feel like more oxygen is in your body, you feel like more vibrant and its just because you have somehow or another calmed the tension, its incredible!” explained Rogan.
